Mr. Block wants him to write an article on "The Man with the Hoe". They want it to be how he came to write it and to include the before after changes. Also to give a few lines of it as it was first published in the Examiner. They also ask him to write about how it was received by the public. This was Mr. Hearst's suggestion. Mr. Block wanted to know if he like the heading he put on his poem.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899).
